I love placing a vase of fresh flowers on my dining room table, or somewhere in my living room to brighten up the space. So when The Grove in Winter Park invited me out to a flower workshop to learn how to create and arrange my own bouquet, I couldn’t resist. I also love giving flowers to my loved ones, however, I feel like there are a lot of tips on flower etiquette we could learn in regards to that. Eileen from FarmGal Flowers answered a few of my questions to give you some great tips.
How do I know what is appropriate when ordering flowers for a funeral?
FarmGal Flowers: I would think about the person’s personality and what they would like. For instance, my uncle was a well-respected physician who loved and grew orchids so we created a garden of potted white phalenopsis orchids for his services. I’m sure he loved it!
What kind of arrangement is best for a get well soon bouquet?
FarmGal Flowers: I believe something bright and cheery is best for a get well soon bouquet. Something with lots of colors and fragrance – bring the outdoors in since the person is most likely stuck inside. We like to use a lot of fresh herbs in our bouquets.
When sending a romantic bouquet of flowers, what is proper etiquette?
FarmGal Flowers: Make the person feel extra special by personally signing the card, including the recipient’s favorite flower if possible, have the flowers delivered, and picking the appropriate size bouquet. Bigger is always better in this situation!
Any tips for sending Birthday, or Holiday flowers?
FarmGal Flowers: Order as early as possible to get the best flowers and select a designer who will provide the freshest (and preferably locally grown) flowers. Establish a relationship with a designer and trust her/him! I always take extra special care of my best clients.
What types of arrangements are best for co-workers to congratulate them on a promotion, or other event?
FLOWER ETIQUETTE
Red Roses: Red roses are always a great gift for a lover for practically any occasion. The meaning of “I love you” behind long stemmed red roses towards your significant other is a winner for any occasion. The red rose signifies “romantic love”.
Yellow Roses: The yellow rose is the flower of friendship. These could be the perfect gift for a co-worker or sibling. These do not express the romanticism of the red rose..
Pink Roses: Pink roses are the flowers of a secret love. They are great when you are in between the friendship of a yellow rose, and the romantic love of the red rose.
White Roses: White roses are the flowers of innocent love. These are a great flower to give to family members, for special occasions, and for funerals.
Carnations: Carnations are considered a flower of fascination. These are an ideal flower to first give to a love interest that has not yet become a relationship.
Orchids: Orchids are an elegant flower of love and beauty. Orchids are an appealing flower that can be given to anyone for any occasion since they do not carry a specific meaning.
Daisy: Daisies represent loyal love. They are actually a great flower to give a woman for Mother’s Day.
Lily: Lilies are the flowers of purity and sweetness. This would be an ideal flower to give to a young female family member.
Chrysanthemum: The Chrysanthemum is a friendship flower, so it could be great for any occasion, but mostly great for getting your best friend.
Flowers are an amazing gift, and unless someone is allergic it is difficult to get it badly wrong when getting flowers for anyone. But if you follow the flower etiquette noted above, you can express yourself wonderfully when gifting some blooms.

I think a flower class would be fun. I have received flowers and like them but never really thought about the process of arrangements. I do however tried to order flowers in advance for timely delivery and like to send plants as well.

This sounds like such a fun event! I love the winter park area (I lived in Orlando for almost 10 years), it’s such a gorgeous place to walk around. I didn’t realize that all the flowers had certain meanings behind them either.
